@45:55 Michael is referencing Krzysztof Kieślowski, famous for his Three Colours trilogy about the values that each color of the French flag represent. Across the three films he does fade outs that cut back to the actor in the same spot as if no time has passed. These are meant to imply deep thought or a subtlety to the scene in question.
